Consultancy role to support Climate Change Education Resource Production

Friends of the Earth is recruiting a part-time consultant (1.5 days per week over the next 2 months) to support completion of a Key Stage 3 education resource on climate change.

Friends of the Earth is in the process of developing a resource for Key Stage 3 level educators in schools across England and Northern Ireland on Climate Change.  The resource uses the Spiral or Active Hope ( as its framework, and seeks to support educators and pupils to understand the socio-political causes and impacts of climate change, and to develop their own responses and action as a result.  The resource sits within a wider programme of youth engagement that seeks to empower young people and to support youth-led action on environmental and social injustice, with a particular focus on climate change.

Working with 11-14 year olds is a new area for us and as such we are seeking an expert in developing resources for this age range.  You will need to possess a clear understanding of the national curriculum and of climate justice issues to help us complete this resource.

We are aiming to launch the resource to educators during the summer term 2021, so it can be prepared and used in schools from September 2021.

Key responsibilities:

  • To complete and edit the educational resource, ensuring it is language and content specific to 11-14 year olds;
  • To assign each lesson to the appropriate sections of the English and Northern Irish curriculum, across multiple subjects
  • To check in weekly with Friends of the Earth project manager and other staff to finalise the resource, including editing to ensure it is in line with Friends of the Earth messaging.

Role information:

  • Hours: Approximately 10.5 hours per week, or 1.5 days.  At least 0.5dpw to be during the working week, to facilitate collaboration with FOE staff.
  • Salary: £200 per day.
  • The consultant will be line-managed by a Friends of the Earth staff member and liaise with the educational resource working group.
  • The role would be suited to somebody who already works part-time or in a freelance capacity. People in existing full-time roles should not apply.
  • This is a consultancy post, so the consultant would have need to organise their own tax contributions.

Person specification:

  • Knowledge of the National Curriculum in Northern Ireland and/or England at Key Stage 3 over multiple subjects such as Geography, History, Politics, PSHE etc (essential)
  • Experience of using the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3 in an educational setting (essential)
  • Experience of writing educational resources (ideally for Key stage 3) (essential)
  • Understanding of the concept of Climate Justice (essential)

  • Background knowledge of Friends of the Earth as an organisation and the work that we do (desirable)
